You can survive in HCM with english. There are plenty of locals VBs that speak english and who can be your gf and let you live like locals, depends on your luck to find a good one.
For Tieng Viet, there is a thread in sammyboy for you to learn tieng viet, it is not the easiest language to learn. In fact it is really painful to learn. Many give up, many struggle on even after years of learning. Think thrice before you embark on this undertaking to learn tieng viet, because it might give you such a big harvest of VBs that you wish you can have multiple orgasm non stop.
Just imagine, instead of a small pool of english speaking VBs, now you can target any VBs you fancy, english speaking or not, it is the big pool of VN VBs. And you will always encounter VBs asking you "Anh la nguoi nuoc ngoai, sao biet tieng viet" or "Anh noi tieng viet gioi qua"
Meanwhile, remember, in HCM, you can still survive using english. Well, just in case you give up on tieng viet after the first basic book.
